Rutgers has contracted with First Student to manage the Student Health Insurance Plan. On the First Student website you can:
Full-time students who do not have health insurance must select a student health insurance plan offered through a national provider with whom Rutgers has contracted to provide low-cost health insurance. The cost of the selected plan will be added to your term bill.
Full-time students already covered by a health insurance plan do not need to purchase additional insurance through Rutgers. You must verify coverage by providing information found on your health insurance card. Private, employer-based, governmental, Medicaid, and Medicare health insurance policies are all accepted as proof of insurance.
Part-time students are not required to have health insurance, but you have the option to enroll in the university-sponsored plan at a higher cost. To enroll, you will need to have a credit card to pay at the time of enrollment.
Students who already have insurance but want to take advantage of the coverage limits and the low cost of the Rutgers plan have an opportunity to enroll voluntarily as part of the insurance verification process.
International Students on F-1 or J-1 visa sponsorship are automatically enrolled in the health insurance plan unless you request the waiver, and the cost of the plan is added to your term bill. If you are covered by another qualifying plan, you can request a waiver. You can also enroll your eligible dependents. Both the enrollment and waiver process are handled separately.
